HOUSTON-TASO Baseball Umpires Award nearly $50,000 In Scholarships

TASO HOUSTON Chapter of the Baseball Umpires announced the awarding of nearly $50,000 ($49,500) in scholarships from their Annual Baseball Umpires Scholarship Tournament.
On June 16, TASO-HOUSTON Baseball Umpires added to their lofty sum of nearly $420,000 returned to the community when they awarded 18 scholarships to winning applicants from 18 different schools. "We had 63 applicants from 42 schools" said Ron Blumrick, TASO Tournament Chair. "12 of those schools were new to the process so we are still growing". "We wish we could award all of them but thats not possible". TASO Houston Chapter President Bob Charmo commented that this year was the hardest because of all the applicants. Meanwhile Blumrick commented "We have taken steps that should get more corperate support so we can award more". (Non-Profit status 501-503). TASO-Houston Chapter President Bob Charmo also announced that the 2011 JV & Varsity championship games will once again be held at Minute Maid Park.
In 2010, TASO-HOUSTON awarded $51,000 to 17 recipients from 17 different schools raised from funds of the 2009 tournament. In 2009 they awarded $48,000. Incredibly, the Umpires have been able to distribute over 93% of all tournament proceeds in the form of scholarships because of the generous support from the business community and the Houston Chapter’s membership.
