2011 Playoffs are Underway

Monday, July 18, 2011

The top six teams in the 2011 MCBL regular season have qualified for the 2011 MCBL Postseason Tournament. This year’s tournament is a double elimination tournament with all games being 7 innings.

With their finish in the standings based upon the number of regular season victories (with ties counting as a half of a win), the Gaithersburg Giants earned the top playoff seed. The #1 Giants, along with the #2 seeded Baltimore Chop, enjoy a first round bye in the tournament.

The other 4 teams in the first round had the Maryland Black Barons (#6) visiting the Columbia Reds (#3) and the Putty Hill Panthers Blue (#5) visiting the Maryland Orioles (#4).

Conventional wisdom says you can throw out the regular season records as each playoff team starts the tournament with a 0 – 0 record.

The Maryland Barons proved just that in tonight’s first game at Joe Cannon Stadium as they took advantage of two errors to beat the higher seeded Columbia Reds in a close 3-2 game. The Barons will now take on the Gaithersburg Giants at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Bachman field.

The second game was still underway with the visiting Putty Hill Panthers Blue jumping out to an quick 4 run lead in the top of the first inning only to see the Maryland Orioles climb their way back to tie the score.

Weather permitting, Tuesday’s and Thursday’s games will be at Bachman field and Wednesday and Friday’s game at Joe Cannon Stadium. If rain cancels out any games, the tournament will go into the weekend for a conclusion with games being played at fields to be determined.
