The 11th annual TASO-Houston Baseball Umpires Scholarship Tournament concluded Saturday at Minute Maid Park in a Varsity Championship game that featured two TASO defending champions; Cy Ranch (2010), The Woodlands (2009). 2011 marks the sixth consecutive appearance for the TASO Championship at Minute Maid Park.
The annual TASO Tournament continues to be the largest High School Charity Tournament in the nation and has long since passed the quarter million dollar mark in scholarships awarded.
In the 2011 Championship, all the scoring for both teams commenced in the second inning where Cy Ranch plated 2 runs on a Bryce Stark BB, a Chase Spears 1B, a Grant Slaughter RBI 3B, and a Zach Brosch RBI/FC.
In The Woodlands’ second inning Alex Dunlop leads off with a 2B, followed by Cory Laughlin reaching on an error. Alex Meize would plate Dunlop on a SFO, Adam Aldred would plate Luaghlin on a RBI 3B, and Aldred would score on an infield error giving the Highlanders their final winning tally of 3-2.
Point of interest: 2011 marks the second consecutive year that a single program claimed the title in both JV & Varsity divisions (Cy Ranch 2010, TWHS 2011)
For the Mustangs, Zach Brosch takes the loss while Cy ranch reliever, Jonathan Whitley held TWHS scoreless the rest of the way. The Highlanders Kevin McCanna slammed the door on Cy Ranch with two innings of pure power pitching to claim the save.
