MCBL 2012 Post-Season Tournament Underway!
Update: Monday, July 23rd, 12:30 am:
Thanks to a untiring effort from the Joe Cannon Stadium field crew, the 2012 MCBL Post-Season Tournament kicked off tonight as scheduled.
In the opener the Rockville Storm took on the Putty Hill Panthers Blue. Thanks in part to a bases clearing single by Cameron Lauf, Putty Hill stormed out to an 8-2 lead.
But Rockville hung tough with their catcher Chris Kyser throwing out two runners attempting to steal second and then making a full layout in foul territory to catch a short pop-up from a bunt attempt. Putty Hill also flashed the leather with left fielder Brody Tennant making a great over the shoulder catch on the dead run to rob a sure extra base hit from Rockville.
Rockville kept chipping away and actually had the bases loaded with the tying run at second based before finally falling to the Putty Hill by a score of 8-6.
Missed opportunities was the story for the Gaithersburg Giants Red in the nightcap against the Maryland Red Dogs. Several times they had 2 or 3 men on base with less then 2 out but failed to push across a run. Again, defense helped the Giants hang tough as third basemen Billy Plante made several nice plays and right fielder Matt Kohn laid out to make a spectacular catch with the bases loaded to end the 7th inning. But the Red Dogs kept up the pressure and slowly pulled away in a 7-4 victory.
On Monday (barring inclement weather) the Red Dogs will take on the Baltimore Chop at 6:00 pm while Putty Hill will take on the Gaithersburg Giants Blue in the nightcap at 9:00 pm.
The Rockville Storm will next play at 6:00 pm on Tuesday while the Gaithersburg Giants Red will next play at 9:00 pm Tuesday in this year's double elimination tournament.
Come on out and watch the boys of summer put on a show this week!
