MCBL 2012 Post-Season Tournament Underway!

Update Wednesday, July 25th, 10:00 am:

In elimination games, the Rockville Storm ran into an absolute buzzsaw last night.  The Storm’s defense played flawless and was highlighted by Alex Lenovitz’s great catch of a pop-up in foul territory.  Alex also added a couple of hits and Zach Nadolny added a double.  But the Red Dogs never let the Storm find a rhythm as they scored in every inning.  The Red Dogs Justin Cohen scattered 6 hits among 4 strikeouts.  Liam Aquino had three hits while John Blasher, Dwight Wilcox, Danny Caddigan and Chris Defeo also had multi-hit games as the Red Dogs won 12-0.

The nightcap had a back and forth battle between the Putty Hill Panthers Blue and the Gaithersburg Giants Red.  The Giants Red plated two runs in the top of the ninth to beat the Panthers 6-5.  This was the first upset of a higher seeded team in this year’s MCBL post-season tournament.

Brody Tennant keyed the 6th inning for Putty Hill as they scored 3 runs in the inning.  Tennant hit a 2 run triple and then scored the third run of the inning putting Putty Hill ahead.  The 5-4 Putty Hill lead stood thru the 7th inning.

After holding GSA scoreless in the 8th, PHB threatened in the bottom half.  Michael Schmidt lead off with a single, advanced to second on a ground out.  After another out, Jennings singled to center field, but Cody Acker made the defensive play of the game as he unleashed a rocket throw to home to get Schmidt at the plate for the third out.  It was the second outfield assist for GSA, who also had an 9-6-2 play to end the 5th, throwing out the Putty Hills fleet Robert Jennings.

Cody's throw inspired the Giants as they put together 5 straight singles in the top of the 9th to score 2 runs and take the lead.  TJ Brockway had the go-ahead RBI and another earlier to lead GSA who had 4 players with an RBI.  Matt Kohn also had 2 RBI for the Giants Red.

At 6:00 pm Wednesday the finals of the winner’s bracket will be held with the Gaithersburg Giants Blue visiting the Baltimore Chop.  At 8:45 pm the Gaithersburg Giants Red will visit the Maryland Red Dogs in an elimination game.
