Year of the Pitcher?
The 2014 season is just over 60% completed.....and the overall scoring for the league is down. So far this year, teams have averaged 4.34 runs per game. This is about 12% less than the usual average of 4.96 runs per team per game. In fact, if we finish the season as this pace, it would be the lowest of all time.........except for the inaugural year of 2007.
Some have speculated that runs are always a bit low in the beginning of the season (as hitters get used to hitting with a wooden bat) and that runs will increase in the latter portion of the season. Some say that pitcher's arms are still fresh but expect that runs will increase as the summer heat begins to take it's toll on the pitchers. Others say they're not making baseballs like they used to. Still others are blaming it on El Nino.
Only time will tell.
See you at the field.
