Entering the Home Stretch

Wednesday, July 6, 2016

With the season just about 75 % completed, the picture is still a bit murky as to which teams might claim the regular season championship and which six teams will make the post-season playoffs.

While the Maryland Red Dogs are not yet mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, they have a tall order ahead of them.  They would have to win out all of their remaining games and hope that several teams fall apart down the stretch.

The Gaithersburg Giants have a rough road ahead of them, but if they catch fire (like the BCC Big Train Stars have done) then their playoff hopes are also clearly alive.

With all but one team already having double digit victories, everyone else has a great shot to make the playoffs.  Based on sabermetrics, it looks like it's going to take at least 16 wins and probably 17 wins to claim a playoff spot (assuming that all teams play their full 32 game schedule).

KOA is on a roll again and could end up with their most regular season victories ever.  The Baltimore Chop have a record threatening offense and are putting up an impressive 6.96 runs per game.

As mentioned earlier, BCC is hot having won 8 out of their last 10 games.  Dig In has the third best offense in the league (5.9 runs per game) and the Diamond Pros have the second best defense in the league (4.08 runs per game).

While it's anybody's guess, sabermetrics is predicting that the Baltimore Rays and the Putty Hill Panthers may end up battling for the sixth and final playoff spot.

However, as we've said before, games aren't won on paper using sabermetrics, they're won on the field between the white lines.

It should all add up to an exciting finish.

See ya at the ball field!!!
