Playoffs Set

In a tough fought, see-saw, back and forth game, Dig In Baseball gave the BCC Big Train Stars all they could handle in the final game of the season.    BCC squeaked by winning 10-9 and thus, earned the # 3 playoff seed by virtue of a tiebreaker with the Diamond Pros who will have the # 4 seed.

The playoffs start this Saturday with what is in effect a play-in round (e.g., the losing teams on Saturday will exit the post-season tournament).  The remaining 4 teams will then play a double elimination tournament until 2 teams are left.  Those 2 teams will face off in a best 2 out of 3 series to determine the tournament champion.

The # 5 seed Baltimore Rays have enjoyed their best season ever and will visit the tough to score upon # 4 seed Diamond Pros who have also enjoyed their best season ever.   The Rays hitters had the second best slugging in the league while leading the league in doubles and tied for the league lead in home runs smashed.  The Pros pitching staff led the league with the lowest ERA.  The game will be at noon at Essex Community College.

One of the two founding franchises, previous tournament champion and always solid # 6 Putty Hill Panthers Blue will visit last year's tournament runner-up, the # 3 BCC Big Train Stars who have made the playoffs all three years they have been in the league.  The speedy Panthers stole the second highest number of bases in the league this year.  The Stars' hitters consistently put the bat on the ball having the second fewest strikeouts in the league.  The game will be at noon at Kennedy High School.

The lowest remaining seed from Saturday will face the # 1 seed and defending tournament champion KOA Sports Green Wave on Sunday at 2:00 pm at Richard Montgomery High School.   The Green Wave's hitters led the league in batting average and slugging.

The other remaining team from Saturday will visit perennial powerhouse and # 2 seed Baltimore Chop on Sunday at 6:00 pm at Joe Cannon Stadium.  The Chop's hitters led the league in on-base percentage and runs scored.

We've seen 5 different teams win the tournament over the last 6 years.  The Baltimore Chop is the only team to have won the tournament twice.

Congratulations and good luck to all of the playoff teams!!

See ya at the ballfield.
