Tournament Commences

The 2018 MCBL Postseason Tournament is underway as both sudden-death play-in games were played Thursday night at Blandair Park in Columbia, Maryland.

The # 4 seed BCC Big Train Stars faced the red hot # 5 Baltimore Chop.   The Chop had won 8 out of their last 10 regular season games and came into the tournament with serious momentum.  However, BCC's pitching staff held the Chop in check as they notched a 5 -2 win.   BCC's starter James Smiegocki limited the Chop to 3 hits over 6 innings while Kenny Rickert came in for the final 3 innings to preserve the win.  BCC's Nick Vermillion was the offensive star with 3 hits and 4 RBIs.  Sebastian Mieses and Mike Guy also had multi-hit games for BCC.  BCC now moves on to face the regular season champion and # 1 seed Maryland Monarchs in the semi-finals.

In the other game, the #3 seed Gaithersburg Giants hosted the Koa Sport Green Wave.  Koa was within striking distance until the Giants put up 8 runs in the seventh inning to pull away...........winning 14 - 1.   Their 14 runs scored was the second most ever in an MCBL postseason tournament game.   The Giants Brady Pearre scored four times to lead the Giants who will now move on and face the defending tournament champion Putty Hill Panthers in the other semi-finals.

The semi-finals will be a best two out of three series and will start on Saturday, July 21st at Blandair Park.

The Putty Hill Panther have won the tournament twice before and the Gaithersburg Giants have won it once.

Neither BCC Big Train Stars nor the Maryland Monarchs have won the tournament before, so we'll be seeing a fresh face in the finals.

See ya at the ballfield !
