Tournament Update # 2

Despite the skies threatening, the 2018 MCBL tournament continued Sunday afternoon at Blandair Park in Columbia, Maryland with double headers for all four teams in the semi-finals.

The # 1 seed Maryland Monarchs playing in their first ever tournament game downed the tournament experienced BCC Big Train Stars 12-3.  BCC started out strong with 5 hits (and 2 walks) in the first two innings while plating 3 runs.   The Monarchs pitching then settled down and scattered 3 hits and 2 walks over the next 6 innings while holding BCC scoreless.  Nico Marchetti, Bryce Rogers-Black, and Mike Guy had mult-hit games for BCC.

Everyone in the Monarchs lineup reached base with multi-hit games from Mack McKisson, Brady Ward, Scott Huntley, Matt Moon and Kendric Musser who had 3 RBIs.  Brad Haas had a great offensive game  for the Monarchs going 3 for 3 with 2 walks and 2 RBIs.  He scored 3 times as did Scott Huntley.

In the second game, BCC kept it close into the 7th inning.   However, the Monarchs scored five runs in the 7th and 8th to win the game 8-1.  Thus, the Maryland Monarchs now advance to the finals of the 2018 MCBL Tournament.

In the other semi-fianls, the # 2 Putty Hill Panthers jump out to a 9-3 lead.   However, the tournament tested Gaithersburg Giants hung tough and kept pounding away to tie the score 9-9.   A wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth plated the winning run for the Panthers to eek out a hard fought 10-9 win.

In the second game, the Giants and Putty Hill became locked in a 3- 3 struggle until Michael Kohn hit a dramatic walk-off homer in the bottom of the 9th to give the Giants a 5-3 victory.  Brady Pearre pitched well for the Giants and limited the Panthers to 4 hits and 2 runs over 6 innings.   Zach Huddleston pitched the final 3 innings and got the win.  Cameron Hyder and Teddy Grass each had a pair of hits and scored once for the Giants.

Thus, the "rubber match" for this semi-finals will now be played (weather permitting) on Monday at Blandair Park at 6:00 pm.

It remains to be seen who will advance to the finals to face the Maryland Monarchs.

See ya at the ballfield !
