Season Ending, Tournament Set
July 20, 2023
The 2023 MCBL regular season certainly didn’t disappoint. The league was very competitive top to bottom.
The intense competition was showcased in a epic struggle between DigIn and Rockville on the final day of the season with the game going into extra innings tied 0-0 (more on that game in a forthcoming article). Kudos to all teams for a very successful 2023 season.
Congratulations to the Baltimore Chop as they won their fourth MCBL regular season championship (second in a row).
Now to the postseason.
Entering Tuesday evening, July 18th, all nine teams were still in contention for one of the six playoff spots. There was a tie for second place with two teams each having 18 wins. Using pre-established tiebreaker rules, the Putty Hill Panthers earned the second seed by virtue of beating the BBA Eagles three out of four games during the regular season.
Hence the playoff seedings are as follows:
# 1 Baltimore Chop
# 2 Putty Hill Panthers
# 3 BBA Eagles
# 4 Rockville Express
# 5 Maryland Monarchs
# 6 Koa Sports Green Wave
The schedule for the double elimination tournament is posted on our web site.
All tournament games will be nine innings (unless tied) and if interrupted, will continue (from the point of stoppage) the next evening. If rained out, they will be played the following night. The tournament will conclude (regardless of status) by Sunday evening, July 30th.
Four of the six playoff teams have won the MCBL post-season tournament before. The Baltimore Chop is looking to leverage their 22 regular season wins (sixth highest of all-time) into the playoffs. The Putty Hill Panthers would like to win their fourth post-season tournament in six years. The BBA Eagles are excited to host their first ever playoff game. The Rockville Express appears to be the most balanced team in the playoffs…..above average in runs scored and above average in not allowing runs. The Maryland Monarchs look to return to their dominance in the post-season like they did in 2018 and 2019. And scorekeepers will need an extra pencil when the Koa Sports Green Wave plays as their 7.5 runs scored per game is the seventh highest of all-time.
Could be exciting!
See ya at the ballfield as you cheer on your favorite team !!
