On the Board or
Off the Schneid ?
June 5, 2025
The Chop, Digin, Eagles, and Panthers did it in their first game. The Clippers and Monarchs did it in their second game. The Dusters and Express did it on their second day of games.
What do they all have in common? They all won their first game of the season.
Now..........what do you typically call that achievement (e.g., getting "on the board" or getting "off the schneid" )?
We've heard it referenced both ways. We've even encountered "breaking the glass ceiling" or "breaking the seal" being used (although the latter usually involves lots of beer).
Typically, "getting off the schneid" means either ending a losing streak or ending a period of not scoring......and it originated with a card game.
In the game of gin rummy, a "schneider" meant that you won the game and your opponent didn't score any points. Why "schneider" came to mean "shutout" when it means "one who snips" (e.g., tailor) in German......is still a mystery.
In any event, I'm sure all the teams are glad to register their first win of the season.
See ya at the ballfield!
